While Brackenreid considers an offer to enter local politics, Murdoch investigates the disappearance of a young woman from Paris. Monique Poirier had just arrived in Toronto to visit her sister, who had moved to there to be with her new husband, hotel owner Roderick Dalewood. Clues lead Murdoch to a seldom-used room in Roderick’s hotel, where he is surprised to discover a man already searching the room. Detective Marcel Guillaume has been sent to Toronto at the request of Sophie and Monique’s distraught father. Despite their contrasting personalities, Murdoch and Guillaume work well together. Realizing that a photograph of Monique is the key to determining her fate, Murdoch invents a prototype of the fax machine to receive a photograph transmitted from France. The “faxed” photo helps the two detectives solve a case that they soon come to realize involves more than one murder.
