OMNI TELEVISION UNRAVELS THE RICH AND INTRICATE LAYERS OF SUSHI CULTURE IN ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY
OH! SUSHI: FROM THE LAND OF THE B.C. ROLL WITH LOVE, MARCH 18

- One-hour documentary examines the significance of sushi in Japanese and Canadian culture -

(Toronto – March 13, 2012) Join second-generation Japanese-Canadian Alyssa Ono as she embarks on an engaging quest through Vancouver to uncover the origins of the ‘B.C. Roll’ in OMNI Television’s original documentary, Oh! Sushi: From the Land of the B.C. Roll with Love. This one-hour documentary follows Ono on her culinary expedition to understand the evolution of sushi and how it has become integrated into North American culture. Oh! Sushi: From the Land of the B.C. Roll with Love premieres Sunday, March 18 at 9pm on OMNI. 2, OMNI Alberta and OMNI BC to English-language audiences, and March 25 at 9pm on OMNI. 2 to Japanese-language audiences.

Traditionally referred to as “o-sushi” with the honourific prefix “o” by the Japanese, sushi’s significance in Japanese culture and the esteem in which it is held is revealed in its very name. As Ono traces its evolution from its Japanese roots to the heart of B.C., she speaks with sushi restaurateurs in Vancouver who shed light on the challenges of introducing Japanese food into North American culture, and the popularity of the food today. While on her culinary journey, Ono also witnesses the care, refinement and beauty that is put into creating o-sushi and why it is revered within the Japanese community.

“Canada is internationally renowned as a country that accepts and embraces diverse culture and tradition,” said Madeline Ziniak, National Vice President, OMNI Television. “Oh! Sushi captures the experience of one of many ethnocultural traditions and foods that have been introduced into our culture, and savoured by so many.”

Oh! Sushi: From the Land of the B.C. Roll with Love is a film by Toshimi Ono from Onodoc Filmmakers Inc. This documentary was made possible with 100% funding from OMNI Television Independent Producers Initiative.
